  • Plot
  • Four New York City cops are dead, killed in an ambush that has the entire police department on alert and on edge. With a cop killer on the loose and so much riding on the case, Chief of Manhattan Detectives Francis Tierney, Sr. asks his son, Detective Ray Tierney, to lead the investigation. Reluctantly Ray takes over the case knowing the cops who were lost had served under his brother, Francis Tierney, Jr., and alongside his brother-in-law, Jimmy Egan.

  • Ed Norton and Colin Farrell star as NYC City cops on both sides of the law. Detective Ray Tierney (Norton) is asked by his father, Francis Tierney, Sr (Jon Voight) to help solve a crime involving the murder of four New York City police officers.

The movie opens up to Jimmy Egan (Farrell) leading the NYPD football team to victory. Ray Tierney joins in the bleachers but is not really interested, but joins his brother, Commanding Officer Francis Tierny,Jr. played by Noah Emmerich, in support of his team. A call comes in to Francis, Jr., 10-13 officer down and both Ray and Francis rush to the scene.

This starts the plot movement of this movie which is really simple. Here it is: Ed Norton, Colin Farrell and Jon Voight really liked the person who wrote or produced this movie and they needed the money so they said, "Yeah, why not, I got a few weekends." It reminds me of an interview with Donald Sutherland when he asked why he made such bad movies. He said, "That movie paid for my house."

Is the movie likable beyond the silly story of Cop Family versus Criminals. Sure. Norton is great at what he does and he exhibits all he's learned from acting school. Take a look at some of these great faces.

And Farrell, he fairs even worse. It looked like he was purposely trying to have a Uni-Brow. . . . I guess most NYPD officers care little about personal appearance. Emmerich did a pretty nice job, when he was visible. His character was dealing with his wife's illness and he lost focus on what was happening under his command.

This movie takes a long time to tell a simple story: Bad cop brother-in-law messes up good-cop-family, fight, fight, love, hate, blah blah blah. If you like mindless violence (as if violence could be mindful) and enjoy watching Norton, Voight and Farrell then you'll enjoy this movie.

As for me, it was okay and I give it a high 2 Action Men out of 5.

I rated this movie higher than it should because it was authentic in the locale. I love to see movies about NYC. I hate it when movies say they are in NYC but really are in Vancouver (remember Rumble in the Bronx? or Jason Takes Manhattan, Pt. VIII).

Everything was authentic, down to the filthy mouths and Dominican blather--hilarious. I have spent lots of time in Washington Heights and it was as if I was there. The dark hallways (during daylight) the bodegas, the steep hills and the white and blue police cars (i feel a little crime).

To quote George Lopez in Swing Vote, "...this is my chance to get back into the city, the crime, chinese food and the crime!" Sometimes you miss home.
